Recently I have learned a new life motto…”Exfoliating is our
friend, not enemy.” Exfoliating is a necessity to anyone’s skin care routine no
matter their skin type (even you my sensitive skin friends). In today’s post I
am going to cover why exfoliating is so important, how to correctly exfoliate,
and share some great products.
What exactly does exfoliating do?!
The average human generates a new layer of skin every two to four weeks. This means that the old, dead skin cells are going to shed. Exfoliating gets rid of all of the dead skin cells and exposes the finer more transparent (aka more radiant!) tissue underneath. If you don’t exfoliate the dead skin cells can clog pores and cause breakouts and blackheads…something we all would like to avoid. The only type of exfoliator I use Is known as a “Mechanical exfoliator” because they contain mini pieces of “gritty substance” that when rubbed on skin dislodges the dead skin cells. This type can be purchased anywhere and at any price. They are definitely the most user-friendly option out there. The other type of exfoliator is a chemical one which is personally a little too expensive and over the top for me.

How can I properly exfoliate?!
Many dermatologists recommend that you exfoliate in the morning. Skin repairs itself at night so the morning is perfect for getting rid of the dead skin cells.
I personally recommend exfoliating 3-4 times a week depending on your skin type. Over exfoliating can cause rough and red skin.
Take the exfoliator and put it on your fingers. Then rub the exfoliator on your face in a circular motion for about 30 seconds. It is important to wash off with lukewarm water always.
If you are in a hurry you can always mix a dime size amount of cleanser with your exfoliator and follow the same procedure as listed above.

My hit list of exfoliators/scrubs!
Queen Helene Natural Mint Julep Facial Scrub is a staple in my shower. At 4 dollars it is one of the best beauty finds out there. It leaves skin feeling tingly and fresh. It also isn’t over drying which is important in a scrub. This can be found at Ulta in the drugstore-esq skincare section (The mask is fabulous too!)

Philosophy the Micro delivery exfoliating wash was made for
my acne prone/acne scarring sistas out there! This product is unbelievable at
helping with acne scars as well as rough patches on skin. This product is very
similar to microdermabrasion without the pain or high cost. Microdermabrasion
is recommended for acne-prone/oily skin girls. This product can be purchased
wherever philosophy is sold, but sometimes QVC does some amazing deals on this
product.
Olay Skin Smoothing Cream Scrub is a product I
come back to during the winter a lot. This is a fabulous scrub that guarantees
to leave skin “Smooth and soft.” It does just that without being too abrasive.
It is perfect for winter skin that is a little bit more sensitive than normal.
When I use this I find that my skin has a nice glow to it and highlighter is
never needed. This can be found at any drugstore.Until Next time..Xo
