I have a question for everyone, if you are going to paint a
wall would you prime it? The answer is yes of course! Primers are used for
everything and they are becoming a necessity especially with makeup. With that
being said let me go into what foundation primers are. Primers work like a
moisturizer by creating a barrier between foundation and skin. The primer fills
in fine lines and wrinkles creating an even base for the foundation to be
applied on top of. Primers also help keep up your foundations staying power…
especially
during the hot weather we have here in Florida. Some other benefits include
minimizing pores, facial oils, and reducing natural face redness.
Now you may be asking what makes primers work?! (obviously I would
include some chemistry!)
There are some water-based makeup primers but most are silicone based. The two most common ingredients are Cyclomethicone and Dimethicone. Both are safe to use on skin. Dimethicone is found in many makeup products and works as a binding agent to keep everything smooth. Cyclomethicone is found in some hair conditioners and retains moisture without the excess oils.

Okay, Okay now on
to applying primer! The first step is applying your regular moisturizer to your
freshly washed face. Allow this to soak in. Then apply about a pea-size of
primer to your fingers. Anymore then that is kind of an over-kill. Smooth this
all over the face making sure to cover the entire T-zone. Allow this a few
minutes to soak in before applying foundation.
Here are some
mini reviews on my favorite primers!
Tarte Clean Slate
Primer: Tarte is one of the few brands known for having all natural products. They
are free of parabens, synthetic dyes, synthetic fragrances, sulfates,
phthalates, and petro-chemicals and this primer is no exception. This primer is
best for girls with dry skin because it really works to keep your face hydrated
throughout the entire day. This does have a matte finish though.
Smashbox
Photo-finish: This is one of the most famous primers out there! It has been
around for awhile and comes in a variety of colors. The bronze and green are my
favorite. The green works really well at evening out redness in skin. My mom
tends to have very red flushed skin and she swears by this. This one does feel
very silicone-y based meaning its slick so a little goes a long way. It also
contains an excessive amount of anti-oxidants that benefit your skin in more
ways than one.
Urban Decay Pore
Perfection Pore Potion: As many people know I swear by the Urban Decay Primer
Potion and this is an amazing product as well. If you have oily acne prone skin
then this is the magic one or you. It contains oil fighting particles to keep
oil at bay. The tube is my favorite part. It looks aesthetically pleasing and
its easy to squeeze every last bit out.
L’Oreal Studio
Secrets Magic Perfecting Base: This one from the drugstore is simply amazing.
It comes in jar form and has the most unique texture. It is oil-free and know
for shrinking pores. Very few people suffer break-outs from this primer as well
(I had none). It is an amazing base as well as primer because it covers my dark
circles and acne scarring. I highly recommend this product.
If you girls would like to see a full review on any of these please let me know!
Until next time..Xo.
