Attack of the killer Sulfates

Lather, Rinse, Repeat. A mindless step we all do every day (hopefully every day for some) but how much do we really know about shampoo. It wasn’t until recently that I stumbled upon a controversial article about one of the main ingredients in shampoo. It’s called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and it makes most hair stylists cringe.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or SLS for short, is almost always one of the first ingredients listed on shampoo bottles. SLS is an extremely cheap detergent. It is what zaps all of the grease and oil out of your hair. SLS can leave your hair extremely bouncy and shiny since it de-gunkified your hair. You can also thank SLS for that lovely lather that most shampoos have. Many people associate that lather with cleanliness, when in reality that isn’t true.

Recently many scientists have been discussing the negative sides of SLS. It has been shown to weaken the hair follicle and cause hair loss. One hairstylist spent 12 years studying the differences in her client’s hair health after switching them to SLS free shampoo. She swears, and manages to scientifically prove, that switching to an SLS free product reduced their hair loss hair thinning, and improved scalp health. Hearing this I decided to dive into the world of Sulfate free shampoo.

As many of my fellow beauty addicts know, ULTA has one of the most extensive selections of shampoo. This is where my journey began. I noticed that many expensive salon brands did contain SLS. That makes me wonder why I’m spending so much money on such a cheap detergent. Oh well, that thought is for another blog. I finally settled on a few brands that had ZERO sulfates in their shampoo. Alterna, Deva curl, kenra, and Brocato were some of the more popular and aesthetically pleasing brands. After spending approximately 45 minutes studying the bottles I settled on Brocato Cloud 9 miracle shampoo. Here’s to hoping that it really is a miracle shampoo.

EXPECT a thorough review of this shampoo after a weeks’ time. I plan on doing a follow up review in a few months as well. Leave me a comment and let me know if you use sulfate free shampoo.

 Until next time..XO
